I am looking at 2004-2006 V70Rs with an automatic transmission.  I
thought that I had read somewhere that the 2004 and 2005 engines were
de-tuned from their 300bhp capabilities on automatics, as the
transmissions were a weak point.  However this was resolved in 2006
with a more durable, upgraded 6-speed automatic.  Unfortunately, I can
no longer find anything that states the output on the automatics vs.
manuals either way.  Can anybody help me with this question?
TIA

Firstly, the 300bhp was largely a figure of optimism! They will give near to
300 but only on 98+ octcane (or your equivilent). On Regular (95 for us)
around 260 is the max on a cold day.

Certainly the press pack for the R showed that although max hp for both
types was the same, the rpms at which it was generated was different (higher
in the auto) but more importantly, the auto had quite alot less torgue in
the mid range, and again the rpm was higher at peak torque than in the
manual. The auto also had max power and torque limited quite heavily in the
first 3 gears.

I dont recall the run-out cars having had a better / stronger auto box
though but they may have...
