Pardon my complete ignorance but reading the manual of my V70 ym2005 it appears that 98 octane fuel can be used in the 2.5T engine without any special modification. On my old Opel, there was a little switch somewhere in the engine that needed to be in the correct position for the selected fuel. What is the advantage of higher octane ? I am using standard lead-free 95-octane and my local Shell shop encourages me to switch to their Shell V-power. Snake oil ? We talked about this here not so very long ago. Whether it's enough to be noticeable I'm not sure. The engine has a knock sensor so low octane fuel will retard the ignition timing and reduce the boost pressure. I can feel the difference between 95 RON and 100 RON on my Volvo driving on german roads (Autobahn with no speed limit). There is much more power and top speed in the engine. Regards Bjørn J. Even in my 160 hp turbo I don't feel any difference to higher grades. But yes, I know, in Finland the lowest grade is the 95 octane (being there in summer... ;-) ).
