Help! Promised a friend i'd have the old vw ready for his wedding this
weekend and I've lost the ignition key. I followed advice from
previous posts about taking the door lock off and getting a locksmith
to match a key to the serial number but as luck would have it the dor
lock is different to that of the ignition!! The second option is to
replace the ignition barrel with a new one but I'm daunted by the idea
of hacking away at an area that is full of intricate switching and
cables.
The manuals indicate that the key is needed to remove the barrel
(which I dont have) so first of all is there an easy way to remove the
key without the key or is it a case of brute force and plenty of
ignorance?!!
Second point is I've started to strip the steering column down but the
turn signal level is stubborn and doesn't seem to want to come out.
I've read that the wiring (2 bundles) from the steering colum have to
be removed at the bottom of the ignition housing where they terminate
in plugs but I cannot locate these plugs as the wiring bundles seem to
dissappear up into the housing. i don't want to pull on the ignition
arm too hard as (I think) there are small delicate pins at the bottom
end which connect to the plugs (which i can't find!) If I'm going to
get the bug ready for the wedding I really don't have time for
anything to go wrong so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

It should be easy to pull out that ign key cylinder/tumbler.
Steering wheel off.
Turn Signal assembly comes out (4 screws) and you may have to push the wires
from the bottom up to give you some room.
Pull off the little caps from 2 screws that hold the ign key
cylinder/tumbler bracket. Bracket off then ign switch assembly will pull
forward some. You may have to use something like a screwdriver to push the
wheel locking pin in but I can't remember. <:-)
Then using a small metal pin through a small hole you can push on the
release spring of the ign key cylinder/tumbler and you should be able to
pull out the switch assembly.
The ign key cylinder/tumbler should have some #s on it too!
You might be able to reassemble everything with the ign key cylinder/tumbler
out. With a screwdriver you should be able to start and possibly drive the
Beetle until you get the key made.
PLEASE DISABLE THE ENGINE SO NO ONE ELSE TAKES IT WITHOUT PERMISSION!!!!!

Your year (69?) doesn't have any plugs; you must disconenct the
wires at the fuse block/dash. Make a sketch. Then just pull
them right thru far enough to whatever.
If you must, drill out the lock core.

It's fairly common to find cars where the driver's door lock has been
replaced but the passenger side is still original. Try pulling that
side. It may give you the key code you need.

Or perhaps the engine deck lid lock matches. I don't know if that was the
norm or not - I redid all the locks to match the ignition years ago.

I had a key duplicated at a locksmith and they pointed out a number on
the key from a '71 KG as the original key code.
If you have the original key from the car this code apparently is the
key" to reproducing a copy. look for it on your keys and record it.
Myself, I hide a key somewhere on the exterior. Hide-a-key?
