about 30 mph. I'd check steering damper. tie rod ends , bent wheel and
wheel bearing adjustment.
Haven't the S.B's had this problem before?

Yes, big issue well known.
Most often people are advised to renew the inner lower wishbone(trailing
arm) bushings. And buy the original ones, or you might be up the same
creek.

Ah yes, the dreaded 71-72 Super Beetle shimmy. I remember it well. My old 71
did it at 45 and it would scare the crap out of you if you weren't ready for
it. Wasn't someone making improved bushings for the these? Urethane or
something?

Yes, and the best way to fix it is to go through the front end and
replace the bushings, strut cartridges, and if needed, steering gear
and idler arm bushing. My '74 was doing that shimmy thing, and I
rebuilt the front end with urethane bushings and a strut tower brace
from TopLine parts. It rides perfectly now, the only downside is the
urethane bushings will squeak. It is has been my experience that it
doesn't matter if you put that goop they come with on there or not..it
won't last and they will squeak within weeks. If you can get past that
noise you'll find that the car rides much better with new bushings and
the shimmy will be gone.
