hey there i'm looking at a 98 golf 2.0 engine with 145000. the guys asking
6500 firm canadian. is this a resonable price. as far as i could see it was
in great shape not one ding on it. i took it for a drive and it drove like a
top but made a weird wining noise for the first 2 min. i'm guesing cause it
was cold. the guy put a new clutch and changed all the fluids( oil tranny ect)
. is there any problems golfs have that i should looking out for around that
many kms or that year of the golf?? thanks
jamie
You already got a problem. The weird whining noise is what I,d worry about.
It could be a throw out bearing, which means his clutch change was
pointless. Also alternator, power steering, timing belt or drive belt
tensioner, or something else minor. You need to find out what it is, or
tell him to fix it, before worrying about the nonexistent possible
problems....If he says he fixed it, make sure the cars cold when you try it
again. Many things are fixed when the car is warm, not cold.... Good luck.

Your crazy. You can't just ask the guy who is selling "HIS" car to fix
the winning noise before selling. He is the seller, it is his car,
it's all up to him how he sells it. When you buy a car from a private
party you always buy "AS IS". Very rarely do you ever get warrantee
since the original warantee is no longer valid usually after the car
changes hands.
Every time you buy a used car there is always a risk you take. It
could be a deal, or it could be a rip off. Sometimes you just never
know.

Well determine what is making that whining sound. Maybe a secondary air
pump if so equipped and might be considered a "normal" noise althought it
might indicate a problem. I am not sure what the canadian vehicles get nor
what they are worth. :-(
Any DTCs or Engine Check light on?
You could/should pay to have it checked out by a specialist, even the dealer
just a thought!
