This could be a result of rainwater getting into the drivers side dash.
While driving the gauges began dropping out along with the instrument
lights comming on repeatedly. Since then the car no longer cranksover.
When the key is turnned to the on position there is a clicking noise
from under the dash. When turning the key to the start position the
starter doesn't crank nor does the solenoid engage. Doing this with the
lights on doesn't dim the lights at all. Thanks for any help.

After reading your post, I get the feeling that I have jumped into the
middle of a thread - but where is the rest of the thread?? I'm talking about
your opening sentence "This could be a result of rainwater getting into the
.......". The question that immediately comes to mind is - WHAT could be the
result of ...?

Sorry this was my first posting, not a thread. The problem started
while driving with the gauges going dead along with the idiot lights
lighting up for an instant, then the dash goes back to normal and this
was repeating. Now the car won't start and the starter doesn't even
engage. I suspect the rain may have shorted something out under the
dash.

I had a water leak under my dash (caused by a plugged up drain) and had many
electrical problems, including some of the ones you mentioned. I discovered
that the fuse/relay box under the dash was seriously damaged by the leak.
After fixing the leak, I replaced the fuse/relay box along with several
relays mounted in that box. That solved all of my electrical problems. Your
problems may or may not be more extensive.

I have seen lots of VWs with leaks around the windshield, and this can lead
to damaged circuits under the dash as well.

If you are going to do the repairs yourself, purchase a Bentley service
manual if you don't have one already. Bentleys are the best. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions I checked the underdash fuse/relay block but
couldn't find anything wrong so we had the car towed to a repair
shop. The problem turned out to be a loose ground connecting to the bell
housing. Apparantly the result of poor workmanship on a clutch
replacement done last year by a different repair shop that we no longer
go to.

Glad to read that the problem got fixed.
