Passat ignition coil failures

I would like to discuss the subject of the ignition coils which sit on
top of the spark plugs.  The factory Bentley manual for my 2002 Passat
1.8T specifies using a special tool to remove these coils.  I read that
after I replaced the spark plugs without the special tool.  Soon
afterwards, 2 of the 4 coils failed.  The failed coils were not the
original.  The original coils failed (without being removed) and had
been replaced by a VW campaign. The new ones have yet another part
number revision, so I wonder if the second set had a defect too.  Anyone
have any experiences or knowledge on this subject?

According to my Audi dealer, there were two sets of defective coil packs
(I have a 2002 A4 that was the subject of the coil pack recall). The
original replacement coil packs were apparently defective also, but they
were replaced with a second revision after only a short time. The coil
packs were replaced on my A4 at the time of the original recall, but they
already had the second revision by then. Again, this is what my dealer
tells me.
