81 Diesel Rabbit truck (caddy)
I want to remove the instrument cluster and I am stuck on a very
simple part of the process.  I do not know how to remove the two knobs
on the bezel (Lighting and cold start pull switches)  Do they pull off
/ unscrew ??????????????  I am afraid to keep pulling and turning
because it seems asthough they will break before they come off.
Help please.

If this is a US built truck, AFAIR the light switch is the same as a
contemporary GM light switch, you pull the knob out, reach under/behind
the dash, find the button on the bottom of the switch, and then you can
pull the knob all the way out.  I can't help with the cold start thing
(my experience was with an '84 GTI)

The cold start knob unscrews.  In order to reach the button  on the
headlight switch, remove the vent cover on the top of the dash by the door.

There was a switch release button on the bottom of the switch.  Thanks
for the answer.

I had an 81 Diesel too (4dr hatchback)

Headlight knob pulls straight off. CS knob for injection pump timing
unscrews. To remove, I pulled my out to the CS position, and then
grabbed the stalk with a set of pliers so that I wasn't just twisting
the cable. Knob unscrews to the left (normal right hand threads)

So what's wrong? Did you clock quit? Email me back if that's what it was.

Good luck.
