I am looking to buy a code scanner for my 2000 beetle. I noticed that there are some that are specifically for VW's. Does anyone know how those differ from the universal code scanners? Does it matter which one I get? Thanks for any help. From what I can tell, all OBDC II scanners will pull basic codes and reset them. Some just have nice screens. To get into the VW specific codes and be able to set things like window, door lock etc. you need a professional VAG scanner, not in the realm of the home mechanic. Some sites offer a OCDB to computer cable and a computer program that supposedly has the VAG functions.Go to www.ODBTOOLS.com . These run $100 and up and I dont know how thorough they are. So for routine codes (02 sensors etc) a low end home scanner is probably ok. For exotic uses you will probably have to pay the dealer / VW specialist to do the work. I am anxious to try it out when it gets here :) It is often cheaper to get your cable from Rosstech. I have found that a cable that is not locked to a computer is a good thing. I have replaced hard drives or laptops 3 times. Reregistering is a minor pain so I upgraded to an unlocked Rosstech cable. |
