Sorry for the poor posting but I don't know how to do it any other
way.  I posted the message below and the update is when the
airconditioning is turned on it still blows hot air.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dermott

Hello,
We have an 01 Jetta with 144k miles, automatic.  Replaced timing belt
and water pump at 83k miles, new accessory belt at 142k miles.
Normally, the temp gauge is at
190 degrees and never budges after it warms up.  It is marked with
hash marks up to the red mark in 17.5 deg increments, the red mark is
at 260 degrees F.
At present, it goes up to 245 degrees at which time I turn the car
off.  This has happened twice.

No coolant leaks, no oil loss, checked underneath and everything
looks
fine.  Checked hoses, connections for leaks - none. When I open the
coolant reservoir, a slight pressure release is heard and the
reservoir fills up to about 3/4 inch more.

At the 245 degree point, the small fan is running and the larger fan
is not.

My presumption is it might be the large fan?

Any way to test which or am I heading in the wrong direction?

Thanks for any help, can't afford a repair shop just now,

Dermott

When your vehicle is at or above normal operating temp.
does the heater blow hot air if it's  turned to the max. hot
setting.   If you get heat out of the heater odds are you
have a failed thermostat. If you don't get heat it's probably
the water pump.   Let us know..

1- got heat or not
2- do fans come on low speed with ac on

Sorry for the delay in answering.

The larger radiator fan did not come on.  Did testing from Haynes and
Bentley and decided it ws the large fan.  Large fan did not work when
power applied, new one did.  So I replaced it.

NEVER thought to check the lower radiator hose, which was cool when I
checked it after taking car for ride and it did not overheat as much
but it did go over 190 which it never has.  So I'm on to replacing the
thermostat also.

Our daughter told me the temp gauge has been going up "a little for a
while".

dont know why they both went about the same time.

Car has 145,000 miles on it and has already paid for itself.  Hope to
keep it to 250,000.

Thanks,
Dermott

I have noticed when the mix is more water than coolant the temperature stays
a little lower sometimes.
So maybe the opposite is true............more coolant = warmer temperature.
