used to own a 80 diesel rabbit, was thinking another one gas or diesel would
make a good commuter car. Are these things still around? are they still
cheap?

If you live in an area with salt from the oceans or ice control they
are not around. Where I live they are crushed as they appear in
junkyards even though they are not rusty.

technicaly I own a 81 FI rabbit, its sitting in my inlaws backyard in Idaho.
Father inlaw rebuilt the engine and it sat there, I bought it for $100 and
could never get it to run. Best I could do was get it to start breifly. Well
I'm in Ohio now and he was going to sell it if he could, thats been 2 years
or so.

I have a very nice 82 Rabbit that I drive regularly but it's almost
the only one left in town.  The old Rabbits are becoming pretty scarce
- at least those that are drivable - even here in rust-free
California.
dave AKA vwdoc1 - 21 Jun 2008 22:51 GMT
I still see a few Rabbits here in Chicago.  Most of the sedans are rusted,
but maybe 1or 2 might be clean since they probably came from another state.
lol
Convertible Rabbits (Cabriolets) are still around but some of them are as
new as 1992 though.
I can still find the 1984-1986 Cabriolets once and a while for sale.
I have even seen a couple of Rabbit Diesels, but those carry 4-digit prices!
<g>

Put another way I see more A/C Beetles than I do Rabbits!  8^)

The small VW diesels are selling at a premium now on eBay, and at most
used car dealers.  They aren't sticking around long either ..... several
Diesel Jettas and Beetle I saw listed on AutoTrader or cars.com had sold
within a day of the listing.

Please don't, they are SMOKING POLLUTING rusty guns.
Also remember a rusty body offers little protection from other vehicles.

No as for the new advanced diesels of this year, go for them.
Craig - 19 Jul 2008 15:27 GMT
Too funny. Do you know how many of the "NEW" VW diesels are on the TOP10
list for most polluting vehicles this year. The Toureg V10 is the #1 worste
pollutor. I belive they have 2 or 3 more in the top 10. Just cause its new
doesnm't mean its clean.

Since the only diesel VW is offering for this year is... NONE, with the new
TDI Jetta to actually be an 09 model (for which I've already placed a
deposit)...  one of us has some erroneous information.

Craig:

Allow me to correct my earlier post...  the VW site does list a TDI as
optional for the Tourareg, although my dealer laughed when I asked about
them as they've never had one.  However, and fwiw, the new TDI 09 version
will be the FIRST diesel to meet emission standards for all 50 states... and
will be the cleanest, greenest diesel ever.
