Hi
I have a 1984 GTI Rabbit.
For the past few months sometimes when I start the car, the runs poor and
the tach does not work, it stays at 0 rpm. Usually after about a minute the
tach starts working and at the same time the car runs fine.
Yesterday the car wouldn't start, I noticed while cranking the started that
the tach did not move during cranking? Should the tach move via cranking?
I need to investigate but I have a feeling in might be a intermittent
contact, I need to look at the schematic but I recall that there are 1 or 2
relays that deal with the tach and the cis system. Perhaps a relay is going
bad?

Sounds more like an issue at the coil.

Clean the electrical connector that attaches to the distributor.I
think it has 3 wires. I used TarnX followed by a distilled water
rinse, then blown dry with an air hose and then a bit of grease to
reduce the chances on corrosion happening again.
