I'm not getting any Scirocco inspiration there. My first thought was that
it looked a bit like what the 914 might have evolved into. And 914 was
mentioned in the article.

That's a better fit than alleging a Scirocco heritage. I still think it
looks more like a 914 is in it's lineage, but I could go for Karmann Ghia.

Another gas-hungry, otherwise useless 2-seater. Exactly what "The
Peoples' Car" needs about now. To go along with their V10 diesel
competing for the most polluting car on earth. it is sad to write that
the Mazda Miata firmly occupies the low-cost "Fun Car" slot at a much
better build quality.
VW does seem to take two steps backwards for every three steps
forward... . And even that is an improvement over recent times.
