2004 Jetta GLS 2.0 Automatic?

Looking to trade up from a 02 Golf GL 2.0 5spd to an 04 Jetta GLS
automatic wagon. Anything special that I should know about the 04
Jetta? TIA

Ok, let me go at this another way. I'm looking to buy an 04 Jetta GLS
2.0 automatic wagon with 97K. Any issues with the auto trans on this
model year? Also, Carfax says the water pump was replaced at 74K. I'm
assuming that this was done in conjunction with a timing belt
replacement but the Carfax doesn't list a timing belt replacement.
Anything else I should be pay special attention to? Thanks.

Clearly not Carfax! <bg> It is becomming clear to many that these
organizations are not nearly as useful as one would belive based on
their self worth statements!

Ask to see the service receipts, as there is no way to know if the
belt has been replaced without either seeing documentation or tearing
down the engine and examining the belt's condition (and brand!)

I agree with PeterD, Carfax may not have correct information but you never
know. ;-)
So ask to see the receipts and ask to see who serviced the vehicle.
Quickly look at the oil filter to see if it is black = good or another color
like orange = bad. lol
That usually helps me decide if the previous owner loved the car and took it
to a specialist, or only did the bare necessities like take it to a quick
oil change place.

I have seen some later model Jetta with automatic transmission problems,
2001s and maybe 2002s. Hopefully you will not have any problem with the
transmission.......fingers crossed.

2.0l Water pumps have that plastic impeller that usually causes problems, so
if it has been changed......that is good.
I doubt if the timing belt was changed since I usually see them last over
140K miles. OF course there are a few belts that don't even make it to 90k
miles but they are usually rare.

Have that car thoroughly checked out by a VW specialist or a trustworthy
dealer.
They can plug into the ECM to check for DTCs and test drive the car for any
problems with the trans.

I prefer the manual transmissions myself! ;-)

The seller specializes in VW / Audi and has been at the same location
for over 20 yrs so I have some level of confidence. I too prefer the
manual transmission but I'm being seduced by a really clean car with
leather seats that sounds right and drives nice. Taking it out for a
good highway drive today or tomorrow. Anyone know if the the 2004 2.0 a
non-interference engine? Thanks.

NONE of the modern VW engines are non-interference.

That Jetta should have the AZG 2.0l engine and if the timing belt breaks the
engine will probably not sustain damage.

See if this place offers a warranty if this Jetta is that good!
Or search around for a GOOD warranty that will set your mind at ease. ;-)
20 years at the same location is good, but happy customers that return for
service or purchase is even better! <g>

Definitely take it elsewhere for a professional opinion on this Jetta
anyway, and I usually recommend the dealer that is hopefully honest!!!!

So here's the follow up... took the Jetta to another independent to
check it out. Developed a list of 11 items to correct including tire
replacement and alignment, they did everything on my list and I bought
it. I did discover one other problem after I bought it... it's not as
much fun to drive as the '02 5 spd Golf.
