When doing an oil change on my E90 320D (I don't agree with an oil change
every two years either), I found that only 5 of the 5.5 litres of oil
actually came out of the sump.
Yes, the car was level, and left for an hour to fully drain. The dipstick
had indicated that the oil level - before any was removed - had been at the
max, but the shape of the sump did not allow full draining of the old oil.
I added new oil until it looked like clean oil coming out of the sump. What
a waste. Stupid design.
What's the betting that when the car is taken to the stealer, the mechanic
doesn't do that and leaves 1/2 litre of old oil in there. This could be the
reason so many dealer serviced cars are running with too much oil in the
sump as the mechanic may not have removed all the old oil, but refilled with
max quantity anyway, leaving too much in there.
I know that some stealers actually 'suck' the oil out through the dipstick
hole, leaving all the crap sediment in the sump anyway. Smart cars, I hear,
do not have a sump plug. Very handy.

So go buy a filter and some oil.  The X5 has enough clearance you can
probably just do it on the curb without even putting it up on ramps.

You can change your own oil in ten minutes flat, and when you do it
yourself you know that the oil and filter really HAVE been changed,
and you don't have to wait for a month for an appointment or pay some
crazy fee.  Try it, it's a lot less work than making the appointment
and waiting for the mechanic to get around to it.

less than 5K miles a year, I do an extra oil change (before the

not an urgent repair, but one month is a little long to wait?

What are the experiences of this group?
