Glen, just got back from holiday and checked car again.I read something on an
earlier posting of things to check.I did check for vacuum at the throttle
body and it was positive and there is no problem with the hose going to the
purge valvefrom the body. What I did then was check for power to the valve by
unplugging the connector to the valve and there was no power present with the
car running or without the car running and thje key in the on position.Where
do I go from here? I now realize that there probably wasnt anything wrong
with the old valve.

You could have a pinched hose from the throttle body to the purge valve.
make sure the vacuum hose is connected and has vacuum.
The NVLD (Natural vacuum leak detection) switch could be at fault . A series
of test with the proper scan tool is required to check this out
