> Was there a compression check done? yes and my mechanic said that the compression was excellent, that was probably one of the first things he did.
While he changed the Fuel Pump he said that he inspected the Fuel filter and did not change it as it was relatively new.

I would be looking for a vacuum leak somewhere. Possibly intake manifold. Or, you have some intermittent wiring issues somewhere.
Pull the intakes, inspect, clean and replace the gaskets. CHeck all vacuum hoses for chaffing or cracking and replace as needed.
Was there a compression check done?

Hi Folks,
My 97 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 SHO, 130K Mileage has turned into a nighmare for the last 4 months.
It shows the following symptoms, I call it the "sad repeating story", I will refer to this story quite often below.
It starts well, drives well for about 5-8 miles and then starts to show loss of power, meaning that the car slows down and when I push the acelerator , the rpm does not go up and the car sort of jerks and barely goes ahead. I stop the car , turn it off and turn it back up and it drives well for another couple of miles and repeats the process.
If I allow it to cool down it drives well for a bit starts the cycle all over again.

When all of this started in August and I took it to my &#@$% mechanic who said that the Tranny is dying and asked me to fix it now than be sorry later, I stupidly did not take a second opinion and had the Tranny fully rebuilt.
Guess what happend after rebuilding the transmission the "sad repeating story" above repeated itself, I then had it checked at another mechanic and he said that one of the Catalytic Convertor was clogged.
1) I then had the Catalytic Convertors Replaced, by now I had spent more on the car than what the car was worth!
This time it ran well for a couple of weeks and then guess what "sad repeating story" again !!
this time I took it to the Dealership to check for the error codes and real reason behind my Service Engine Soon Light ? ( Showed Cylinder 5 Misfire )
The Dealership said very confidently that it was just the fuel pump
2) I had the fuel pump replaced and it drove well for a week and then the "sad repeating story" again !! ( part of the whole story is that I dont drive a whole lot, work is like 5 minutes from home and everything else is closeby )
I then took it back to the dealership, had them run diagnostics with the same - Cylinder 5 Misfire
This time they recommended the following
a) Replace O2 Sensor in Bank One b) Tune Up ( Said one plug was malfunctioning ) c) Clean EGR ports d) reprogram CPU e) Clean fuel Injectors ( they said that it was not necessary )
I had the following done at my mechanic
3) Clean EGR Ports 4) Replaced O2 Sensor in Bank One 5) Replaced all Plugs and wires - Complete Tune Up
The problem did not go away after these three were done, I drove for a day and was part of the "sad repeating story" again !!
I then
6) Replaced Ignition Coils 7) Repalced EGR Sensor 8) Replaced EGR Vaccum Solenoid
and within 15 minute sof driving after that the "sad repeating story" played itself again.
I dont know what to do now, the Error codes read Cylinder 5 Misire and Cylinder 6 misfire. Please Advise.
