I had the same idea and did the same, but found that the stub did not
fall apart.  Instead I just grabbed a smaller screw and used that in
the new hole in the stub.  Its worked just fine for the past 3 years.

Take a power drill, and a drill bit that is just slightly smaller than
the stub.  Drill into the stub; it should disintegrate enough to clean
the remains out of the threaded bolt.

it broke off when I was unscrewing it. Anyone have any idea how I can
get the screw out of the hole, there is only the plastic stump
remaining.
