i was told by the mechanic that the likely cause for the coolant smell when the heater is on is a failed heater core. could it be anything else? how long would this take? -c

How did you come to the conclusion you need a core? Did your rad cap fail and blow up the core? You're the first person I can think of thats' asked in a long time.
Unless there was tap water instead of coolant in there, how could it get wrecked?
