The stator/overrrun clutch can be checked with a special tool, on 96 and newer a special scanner can check the TC for slippage in the car test.

1996 pontaic grand prix 11-27-2005 23:15 - I Have a 1996 grand prix there is a noise a loud clunking noise when you begin to slow down comming from the transmission. then when the car is in isdle there is the same intermediate noise comming from the tranny even more so when you slightly rev the engine . occasionaly it seems .like the trany slips between shifting or not go into gear at all. could it be my torq converter locking up or bad?
