Early 944's just need the old strut to be unscrewed. So you unscrew the top of the strut, and slip in a new cartridge.
It's the newer 944's that require extensive refit for a cartridge replacement.

I need to replace my front struts. As an alternative to just replacing the front units, I've come across the idea of cutting off the shock absorber part of the strut and replacing it with a Koni insert. This sides a bit strange to me, but Koni is a reputable brand and the conversion is considerably cheaper than just replacing the struts. Does anyone have any experience with this conversion? How reliable is it?
