On a 944S, seeing the TDC mark from the top of the engine is a little difficult because of all the wiring, oil vent hose, etc. However, the mark on the bottom side is easy to see, and I'd take a look there. Same deal as with the earlier cars in terms of location.

ok, I've changed timing belts many times, to convirm TDC you just look in the little viewport above the flywheel and align the OT mark with the pointer. Well, this is a 944S, and I can't see any OT mark, nor can I see the pointer I expect. I have a 85.5 hard copy manual, it isn't any help. I have a soft copy manual, the one from the web, and I have a soft copy 16 valve supplement - can't find anything saying how to set the TDC - anyone care to offer a hint (yeah, I know, remove the head and look at piston #1 - and several tricks involving a piece of dowell and removing #1 sparkplug come to mind, but ...)
