I've had an ongoing problem with a gas smell in my Ford Ranger (only

The smell is quite intermittent.  Sometimes it's several minutes after
the first engine start-up of the day, other times it's the 3rd start

Can a gas tank leak generally be fixed without having to replace
the tank?

A Saab dealership told my Mom who fills up her tank about once every two
months to only fill the tank halfway so that the gas doesn't get old.

How well do these cars hold up over time?  I'm looking for an inexpensive
no-frills used car with relatively low mileage.  I'm not too concerned if
if's not comfortable, if it's noisy or if it's kind of gutless, as long as
it gets me too work and to the grocery store and holds up ...
