My son started the van yesterday morning and while giving the engine a moment to settle put on his seat belt and turned on the headlights. As soon as the lights went on the engine died. Now, we have the following symptoms:

| better mileage with higher octane? | 09 Jan 2007 21:48 GMT | 135 |
is there any truth to the statement that using a higher octane gasoline will result in better gas mileage? I understand that it may have other beneficial properties ie. anti-knock, acceleration, etc.. how would one calculate such a statement?

| rebuilt or new alternator, starter? | 09 Jan 2007 16:08 GMT | 6 |
Auto Zone and NAPA say their rebuilt domestic alternators and starters are as good as the new ones they sell. Do you agree or not? Dealer also sells rebuilt starters etc. Would a rebuild from dealer be better than a NAPA rebuilt starter? I avoid buying new from dealer

| Are brakes simply brakes? | 09 Jan 2007 00:12 GMT | 8 |
Sorry, this might seem like a naive question. I have repaired brakes myself on my cars for many years (Cavalier and Corolla), and I now have a friend who wants me to repair her worn brake pads for her Xterra. I am not familiar with this SUV, but is it safe to say replacing brake ...

| best way to "downsize" a bus engine? | 08 Jan 2007 13:41 GMT | 7 |
for an Asian procurement, I'm looking at a stripped Toyota Coaster bus as the starting point to convert into a relocate-able office. I use the term "relocate-able" rather than "mobile" because there will never be a need to go faster than 25 mph. The thing won't be more than once a ...

| Balancing tires on a Hunter GSP 9700 | 08 Jan 2007 05:01 GMT | 4 |
Am getting new tires and have become aware of this machine. Is this one of many brands of wheel-balancing machines, or is it worth seeking out? When I have bought tires previously (which is seldom) I have paid no attention, and have had no problems.

| Motor Size | 07 Jan 2007 23:20 GMT | 7 |
I realize there must be a lot of variables, and perhaps you can elaborate on the more important ones, but generally speaking, is a 6-cyl motor going to be inherently more durable than a 4-cyl, and an 8-cyl more durable than a 6-cyl?
