When the car is going uphill, or otherwise under heavy load, the air

i'm not much of an auto mechanic but i pulled out my engine and put a newer
89' engine in my camaro. everything hooked up just fine my problem is

I have a 1981 Camaro with the 3.8 litre 229 cubic inch V-6.  I have
completely gone through this car and thanks to Classic Industries, a good
chunk of money and a lot of work it's looking pretty damn good.  I do have
one big pain in the a.s problem though.  Every couple of weeks or ...

when i turn on my car it smells too much gas and is backfiring way too
much. when i move it, it doesnt respond to good. when i turn off the car
and try turning it on again it doesnt want to turn on and im trying to
figure out what it is but i dont know if anyone can help plz do..

my check engine light is on, throws code 33 i believe, which i think is the
manifold air temp sensor, i replaced it, now the check engine light returned,
could it be the ECU that is messing up??

Anyone have experience with this? What are the three wires on the HEI for?
