Jim,
Your best bet would be to replace the sender. Its not expensive compared
to other Benz replacement parts, and the use of an adjustable wrench will
suffice as far as a replacement tool goes. Just remember to remove the

Dear Group,
This is a short and precise question.
Anybody out there had any luck hammering a screwdriver into the lock
tumbler of an ignition lock on a Mercedes 190 ?

190 2,3E 1987 won't start26 Oct 2005 09:40 GMT10
I've earlier had a few occasions, where the engine would not start, but
only gave a few smelly poofs backwards through the airintake when
stopping cranking. After waiting some hours, it would start and run
smoothly without problems for a long period.
Low engine rpms at idle for 93 190E 2.3L26 Oct 2005 08:50 GMT4
I have a 93 190E 2.3L and when I put the thick oil 20W-50 this past
June 2005 I noticed that the engine would on occasion idle and vibrate
at a low rpm after initial startup and at other times it would idle low
at a stop when the car engine was warmed up 100 C and had been driven
91 300E Heating Problems26 Oct 2005 06:08 GMT9
In the cold weather, the heater is sporadic. Once the car is warm,
especially when it is raining, the only way to get it heat up the inside, is
to floor the gas pedal. I'll get some mist on the windshield, and then the
hot air comes out and it gets nice and toasty.
Costs of Maintaning/Repairing an Older Mercedes?25 Oct 2005 23:21 GMT6
Can anyone give me a gerneral idea on of owning an older Mercedes?
Let's assume the car is a sedan that has between 100k and 120k miles
and is between 8 and 15 years old. What will be the general costs? What
would be the worst case expense? Would it be $2000? $5000? How many
83 300SD shifter ??25 Oct 2005 22:12 GMT2
My 83 300SD with 119,000 miles is running just fine but I've noticed a noise
coming from the gear shift lever epescially in drive and reverse, no noise
in the other slots.  The noise is a little like when you try to shift a
standard and grind gears but quite subtle and no always ...
Auxiliary Water Pump25 Oct 2005 17:42 GMT4
My 1987 300E has a leak in the cooling system that appears to be coming
from the Auxiliary Water Pump.  I understand that this is used to pump
water into the heater core during engine idle.  I called the local MB
dealer who quoted me a price of $357.50.  I found a new one online for

Smart car safe?25 Oct 2005 12:58 GMT40
The Smart car has a rear engine which minimizes any substantial crumple
zone in a front-end collision.  In effect, the driver and passengers
are the crumple zone and if hit hard, you will not likely survive.
Gas mileage may be great, but you compromise a lot.  BTW the back won't
