I have a 96 C280. Just recently the fuel gauge would move from the
full position (the tank was full) to the empty position. About a
minute later  the gauge would indicate full again.  
Then today with half a tank of fuel the gauge went from half to full

I have read some posts regarding this subject. It's been stated that
there is no reason to drop the driveshaft. I want to avoid that but I'm
concerned thet there is a 'centering sleeve' that's pressed into the
driveshaft front flange that connects through to the transmission

Last week, I started noticing quite a bit of fore/aft play in my shift
lever, accompanied by loud clicking (heard from outside the car) when
moving the lever.
