I have a 2002 C-Class. Approximately twice per month but at very random
intervals, it suffers a total electrical shutdown. I am driving along, and
suddenly speedo/revs/fuel drop to zero, wipers stop, indicators and lights
stop functioning, radio goes silent - but engine carries ...

Pads on front are fairly new, not sure about the back ones, can't get wheels
off, but the brakes won't pump up, car stops but not real quick, if you are

Can someone explain what happens/goes on with the ABS.
When I switch on the ignition, I hear the sound of a pump start up
(not the fuel pump) in the engine bay. This runs till I hear a click
(5 secs or so), then the process repeats again at infinitum.
