Any idea what the process is for changing out a Dimmer Switch? Mine stopped

I have a 1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme SL.  The A/C was working great until one
day it no longer got cold.  It seems that the compressor will no longer turn
on when engaging the A/C switch.  It is the original A/C system with the old
style freon.  It still blows but just doesn't get ...

car starts up fine-goes about 10 miles and stops.
It just shuts down. We checked packs and the thing under them with new
ones and still it stops. Once it seems to cool off it starts again and go
another 10 miles and stops again. What can I do or check.
