Drive shaft, clutch or transmission  ?

I get a  "clunking" noise from below then I let out the clutch peddle and
accelerate - sometimes.

Does anyone know if a 86 transmission will fit properly (function) on
a 84 944?  If it does fit is there a way to use the speedometer
function off the newer transmission?  Last question is there any
affordable quality work 944 transmission rebuilders in the northern
