I found out that the other driver who hit my car (and got ticket) was driving with suspended license. That explained why he was acting so nervous and begging me not to call the highwy patrol. He was driving on the bicycle lane when he hit my car that was turning

i'm looking at a 2000 outback with 70k miles at the local dealership. it's already had the coolant additive as preventative maintenance against the head gasket (which is further warrantied until 2/08 or 100k miles) and the PCV valve replacement to prevent crank seal problems.
