We have a 03 Outback wagon  LL Bean 6 cil. automatic.47,000 miles.
After driving it in third gear it smells like burning rubber. It was
so bad at one point that another driver pointed out that smoke was
coming from our car.

On a '97 Outback.  I'd like to locate it so that I can bypass it, to
determine if it's the reason the starter won't.
If it's underneath the dash, or the console, I'd appreciate tips about
opening that up.  How big a job is it?

Sometimes the A/C is fine and sometimes the A/C blows heat, even in
the "Vent" setting. Gas pressures in the line are OK. No pattern.
Where are the sensors and electrical parts that could be the issue?

Replacing my stock tires, which are 205/70-15.  Is it worth going to a
215/65-15 ?  Will they fit?  Will bigger tires hurt anything?
