VIN # vs. engine serial # -- any correlation ?15 Nov 2005 12:31 GMT11
I'm looking at a '99 Subie that a guy is selling and he has stated
that he replaced the engine. I'm concerned that he is not telling the
truth because he says that he has lost the paperwork that shows that
he bought & had the rebuilt engine installed.
Tips when changing a Subaru Timing Belt15 Nov 2005 12:27 GMT5
When I changed my belt no one gave me these tips. And the book was also
not much help when it came to these. So, here are the tips, the rest
you can get from the book:
1)    Parts that no one seems to mention you should purchase while your

Removing STI Tail Fin...15 Nov 2005 01:27 GMT30
I just bought a new 06 STI.
I don't like the attention that tail fin attracts.
I've made an apointment with the Body shop to have it removed.
At reasonable speeds (less than  80 mph)
"Camshaft Drive Belt" = Timing Belt?15 Nov 2005 00:09 GMT8
In the manual for my 2001 Forester, it recommends that the "Camshaft
Drive Belt" be inspected every 30K miles.  Is this the same thing as the
timing belt?  If so, how does it get inspected?  (I've always been told
that replacing it is labor-intensive due to the need to take half ...

I don't know if this newsgroup is actually for this sort of thing but
anyway:
I have a 94 rs legacy which died the other day.  We found that the fuel pump
wasn't working.  We took that out and tested against the battery, it works
Oil leaks at 59,000 miles ??? !!!14 Nov 2005 03:37 GMT30
I've got a '99 Outback Sedan (it was actually called the "SUS" -- Sport
Utility Sedan -- for that year only).  Has 59,0000 miles.  Came back
from a 4-hour trip (each way) the other day and smoke was pouring out
from under the hood!  So I took it to my local mechanics who told me
2006 Forester vs Outback14 Nov 2005 00:27 GMT16
I am looking at the 2006 Forester Premium vs the 2006 Outback 2.5i-
they are almost identical in price.  Are there any decent sites
comparing the two?  Anyone have any gut reactions that they want to
share?

than 9000$ at <100K miles.

New Forester?12 Nov 2005 05:55 GMT9
I own a 2002 model Forester S. I bought it in summer 2001 when the 02's
came out. At 55k miles, it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. Now I'm
thinking of buying a new Forester and give the "old" one to my wife (who
loves driving it). My question to the newsgroup is simple: Are ...
Head gasket leak repaired 8 month ago. Still high (25ppm) HC in th cooloing system?12 Nov 2005 02:55 GMT1
Hi, everyone
Pre-purchase check of the 99 Legacy showed high (20-25ppm) of
hydro-carbons in the cooling system. The mechanic advised it is a

LGT manuals wanted12 Nov 2005 00:09 GMT4
When I had my WRX I found a good source (in pdf) of all the Subaru factory
maintenance manuals.  You know, the factory version of "Chilton's" or
whatever it be.  BTW, if someone wants to host them I can give them to you.
Does anyone know where I can get the same things for the new ...

1999 Subaru Legacy Outback missing oil11 Nov 2005 13:56 GMT3
I have no idea where my oil could be going because there are no
apparent leaks.  I bought my subaru used about six months ago and have
put in several quarts of oil now.  It starts up nice and runs good when
it is warmed up.  (???) The check engine light came on again two weeks
