OK, I need some help here (It's about cars...)17 Dec 2008 22:39 GMT5
I understand how a clutch works, but how does a torque converter work?
My Legacy wagon needs new head gaskets (it may need new heads...when I
started it up it smoked like a biotch!)
My thought is to yank the engine leaving the trans behind. I never
Lighter socket dead11 Dec 2008 16:46 GMT4
My daughter's 2001 Forrester has a dead lighter socket and the seat eaters
have stopped working. Is this a relay or fuse problem? She lives 90 miles
away and doesn't have an owner's manual.

EJ22/Legacy engine question11 Dec 2008 14:00 GMT4
For 5 years I have an EJ22 from a Japanese import in my VW Vanagon.  It is a
GREAT combination.  (The engine was out of a 1993 automatic "Brighton"
model.)
There is something that has always puzzled me and someone on the list may be

winter rims?09 Dec 2008 00:03 GMT21
Sometime back the service guy at the dealership said that Subies require
special winter rims, not the standard black ones that you get at an auto
parts stores. True or not?
Second my standard rims are 16 inchers. I was wondering if I could go

WRX Re-calibration ABS recall08 Dec 2008 22:50 GMT6
I received a letter from Subaru regarding my 2002 WRX braking.  They offered to replace my ABS ECU with a new unit that may offer a better braking "feel" in certain situations but give "no perceptible difference in overall stopping distance."
I don't feel like I want to bother if ...
Auto Trans fluid, '89 GL AWD Coupe08 Dec 2008 21:13 GMT10
3 speed AT, started slipping the other day so I checked the fluid; nothing
on the dipstick!
I added a quart, and it appreared at the bottom of the dipstick, just. Not

Thermomstat location, 97 Brighton Wagon, 2.2l08 Dec 2008 21:08 GMT2
The thermostat seems to have expired on my 97 Brighton Wagon with a
2.2l engine.  Car takes much longer to warm up in the winter then it
used to.  For now, cardboard is the solution, but would like to
replace it,
Does your manual gearshift return to center?07 Dec 2008 16:43 GMT8
When I bought my 95 legacy in 2002, the gearshift wouldn't return to
the center position. Every other car I've ever owned will return to a
point exactly in the center of the shift pattern--between third and
fourth. Mine will sit there if you put it there, or if you just pull
Replacing Bulbs Under Seat Heater Switches05 Dec 2008 20:19 GMT4
Is it difficult to replace the bulbs under the heater seat switches in a
2004, Subaru Outback?  The dealer told us it was not a simple job and would
take about an hour of the mechanic's time.  Is this reasonable and could a
DIY person compete the task?  Special tools?
Forester Tires04 Dec 2008 16:47 GMT6
I have a 2004 Forester XS that needs new tires. I live in the
northeast and HATE to drive in snow and ice, so I'm wondering what
kind of tires will give me optimal performance in those conditions.
Consumer Reports suggested Dunlop Sport SP 5000s, performance all-
