Unfortunately the door handle on the inside of my 99 Corolla has stopped

I am new to this group, so here goes.
We have a 08 Avalon with remote engine start. It seems that it only wants to start when your just 3 feet from the car and only on occasion when your 30 to 40 feet from it. Seems to me the security function on the car is what is acting up.
