oops wiring got hot30 Jun 2005 20:50 GMT2
Something shorted in the back of my Ford Laser GL ( same as Mazda 323)
I think it was the back window wiper motor.
The wire got so hot it melted the plastic insulation covering and did
the same to the other wires around it. Lots of smoke and nearly a fire!
Mot Fleet Vehicles30 Jun 2005 20:36 GMT16
I have been told this by an MOT garage but it does not seem right.
If I have a fleet vehicle which I know to be defective e.g. because the
brake lights have failed or the screen wash does not work even though I have
filled it. I can take it wherever the company ask me to ( in this ...
Running in the brakes30 Jun 2005 19:28 GMT62
I've got brand new pads and discs on the front of my car, and they're
rubbish!  Do these usually get a lot better as they bed in?  I've done
about 70 miles on them now, and they are still rubbish.  It's almost as
bad as the brakes were when the engine was off!  They are supposed to
Brakes engaging at different points30 Jun 2005 12:53 GMT4
We have a 1989 Escort as our second car - everything is mechanically
sound and runs well, but over the past few weeks I've noticed that the
brakes are engaging at different points when pressing the pedal.
This isn't a huge problem as they always work, but occasionally there's
how much is clutch replacment on bmw 525 td se ?30 Jun 2005 09:26 GMT26
I went to look at this car but it judders when pulling away and I
suspect the  clutch is badly worn. Does any one have ideas how much it
would cost to replace one ? It's a 95 N reg,  What if they have to skim
the fly wheel , would that be engine out time ?
Accident Query29 Jun 2005 23:34 GMT97
First of all, this is not a car maintenance query but there are no car
accident newsgroups.
Today I was approaching a give-way at a T-junction to turn left into a main
road. As I approached there was a car coming from my right. He was going
Cavalier ABS light29 Jun 2005 23:26 GMT22
95/M Cavalier, 102,000 miles, 2.0i Ecotec lump.
I was dismayed when the ABS light failed to go out after starting a few
days ago, as I know ABS faults can be expensive.  Initially I put it
down to a wet sensor or connection after driving through a puddle (I'm a
MOT expiry date29 Jun 2005 22:52 GMT14
I've booked my car in for a service and MOT on 10th July but I think I've
screwed up - having just checked my paperwork my current MOT expires on 11th
August.
Will they be able to give me a 13 month MOT, ie till 10th August next year? I
Issues after death of car owner29 Jun 2005 18:20 GMT9
Well my Dad passed away last week and now all the funeral things are
finished we have to start thinking of the practical aspects, particularly
what to do with his car.
The car is off road, in the garage, although the tax is not due until the
Second hand fuel injection system for Rover V829 Jun 2005 17:14 GMT4
If I were to come across a fuel injection system for a Rover V8, what is
involved in fitting it?
What do I need in the kit so that installation is reasonably
straightforward - i.e. not likely to be stymied by missing parts,

Honda Civic caliper leaking28 Jun 2005 23:33 GMT1
Just changed the discs and pads on a friend's N-reg Civic with 75k miles
on the clock. The calipers looked fine - no signs of leaks - but when I
pushed the piston back in on the nearside caliper a fair quantity of
fluid oozed out from behind the dust seal.
Rust protection?28 Jun 2005 22:54 GMT10
The girlfriend has just noticed (ok, I've had to point it out to her)
that she's getting a small patch of rust just starting to bubble through
the paintwork on the sill around the area of the rear of the passenger
door - car is a '98 Ford Ka3, BTW (aha, explains the rust).
Peugeot 306 1.9D Outer CV Joint Boot28 Jun 2005 21:19 GMT4
I've just noticed that the left-hand outer CV joint boot on my 1993 306 has
split, throwing grease all around the rear of the hub.
I was wondering if anyone has successfully replaced the outer boot on a 306
without removing the driveshaft from the car, and hence avoiding draining
