Road tax online question?14 Feb 2006 10:12 GMT6
Just got my new computerised MoT today.  I understand you can now apply
for road tax online without going to the PO.  Can I still do this if the
taxation class is "Disabled" or will I need to apply at the PO so
they can view and stamp the exemption certificate?

Hi, ford mondeo 1998, mk2 with fitted radio. Previously had a tomtom pda and
bluetooth gps navigation device, mounted on the windshield and charged by
the cig lighter. Cable would come from the lighter to the mount (pda would
sit in the mount and be charged) and the tomtom would ...
Escort gearbox - 5th gear selection problem14 Feb 2006 00:01 GMT5
I'm having a refurb gearbox fitted to a 96 1.6 litre Escort at the moment.
It was meant to be all done by today but they are having a few problems.
Everything works apart from that they can't engage 5th gear.
Any ideas why this might be? Is it just a case of adjustment somewhere or ...
Exhaust durability...13 Feb 2006 23:38 GMT4
I've noticed that just about every dead exhaust I've seen is rusted through
at the joints, hardly ever in a length of pipe or a box.
Since the sheet/tube metal seems to be galvanised I guess it's the
non-galvanised nature of the welds that's causing it to be more rust prone

best one ever methinks folks!
Gearbox13 Feb 2006 20:22 GMT5
Recently I test drove a front wheel drive car that seemed OK apart from the
fact that when in 3rd gear, the gear stick moved back about an inch when I
blipped the gas pedal. Did not seem to happen in other gears though. Another
stranger thing was that there was some sideways rocking ...
engine oils13 Feb 2006 18:36 GMT13
I recently bought a 1989 Porsche 944 S2 and on the 450 mile journey home the
'low oil level' light came on. I stopped at the nearest service station and
purchased a litre of Castrol 10W40 oil which I used to top up as sure enough
the oil level on the dipstick was nearly at the ...

cleanly after the support bracket failed leaving the exhaust unsupported and
it just snapped off.

Boiling water onto cold windscreen?13 Feb 2006 11:12 GMT98
I still remember how a long time ago someone assured me that he
defrosted his car windscreen on cold mornings here in the UK by
boiling up a kettle of water and pouring it over the screen.
But wouldn't the hot water immediately crack the screen?
New Hatch13 Feb 2006 08:26 GMT25
Hi. I am just interested in what you think are the best new hatches at
the moment?
If you had to chose between the following based on looks, drive and
equipment etc, just the basic model not any hot hatch like the ST or
Vectra oil pressure light13 Feb 2006 00:50 GMT7
On my 1999 1.8 Vectra,  68,000 miles,  the oil light comes on at low
tickover speed,  at a rev-counter reading of about 600 rpm (which I
realise is a bit low for idle).  Is this usual?  I note,  the handbook
does mention this,  but I had never noticed it on my 1993 Cavalier.  Is
turning the alarm off13 Feb 2006 00:49 GMT7
A friend has a 1990 VW Passat GT estate and disconnected the battery.  He
didn't realise that the vehicle has an alarm and it keeps going off
everytime he tries to reconnect.  He does not have a key to disable the
alarm.  How does he reconnect the battery/disable the alarm ...
