My BMW 528 has just failed on 'excessive play in front wheel bearing' It's not noisy and doesn't show in driving. Having looked at the various MOT sites I can't find a definition of 'excessive play'. So what is it? My SD1 workshop manual gives the amount of free play they specify - ...

Anyone know how Proof of no Claims works with Insurance companies? Do they cap it at a certain level? I tend to change my insurance every year but regardless of how many years I haven't made a claim (never have) the proof of no claims is always either 5,

Does bump starting and running out of petrol ruin the catalytic converter? I've been bump starting quite a bit recently and I ran out of petrol a couple of times in the last year, and my car is due it's first MOT.

Does anyone here have a toledo ( not the latest one, the one before it ) I saw one on a forecourt at the weekend, and it seems like quite a good secondhand buy. You get loads of gizmos, a VW Engine / Audi style

| Fiesta Zetec 1.25 clutch | 10 Feb 2006 11:21 GMT | 2 |
Just out of interest, it is quite straightforward to change these without dropping the subframe, etc. removing the belt tensioner and the water pump pulley bolts will allow the engine to move sideways enough to change the clutch through the gap.

| Brake disk thickness | 09 Feb 2006 20:11 GMT | 14 |
On my last car (Mk2 Fiesta) I used to change the brake disks when the MOT man said "they're a bit thin". I now have a Lotus Elise and the manual says: new they are 26.0mm thick and the service minimum is 24.9mm.

| MOT fail on wheelbearing | 09 Feb 2006 12:19 GMT | 4 |
Interesting that no one has given a definitive answer - like 3mm movement at the top of the wheel or whatever. My experience of worn wheel bearings is they go noisy first - but can still pass an MOT. Not that they're quiet but have too much play - unless
