I'm looking at a Rover 220 diesel that someone has bought cheap,
probably too cheap. Its a bitch to start from cold and loses power at
speed with the ( brand new and therefore not blocked) filter in circuit.
With the filter out of circuit it  just about runs OK, new fuel hoses,

When the fan is on in our car diesel can be smelled (smelt?).
I remember the garage mentioning a leak when I last had it in but it was
only slight at the time and a repair was suggested as uneconomical.
It has obviously got worse and I was wondering about the health aspects of

Is there any strong reason not to use engine oil in a gearbox?
Will it damage the gearbox oil seal(s)?
I've just replaced a driveshaft in my car and can't be bothered to
drive to Halfords to buy gearbox oil.

when my engine is cold i get glow plug lights and it starts first time
when it has been run i dont get glow lights and it takes ages to start
when it deos after 5 min of constant turning over it is very smokey i
changed glow plugs,fuel filter,the brain which runs the cooling

Im getting really really really terrible fuel economy.
I just put some fuel in my car today as an experiment.
12.61 litres = 50 miles, ie, what's that, 18 mpg?
Thing is, I can't figure out what's wrong with it.

Can anybody remember which Rootes car from the 60`s 70`s had the engine

My Passat 130 TDI has started making a noise only under load.
