Headlight bulb27 Dec 2007 21:59 GMT4
My car's been tending to stall when I put the headlights on, so I
investigated and found the earth terminal on the wiring connector that
attaches to one of the bulbs was partly melted.
The earth appears to be OK, it has the same resistance to battery negative
Alternator woes27 Dec 2007 21:16 GMT10
The very good looking alternator from the scrappy on my MK2 Golf turns out
to be rubbish. It looks a month or two old, but it's not charging until
you're doing about 2000 revs, making driving in traffic an absolute pain.
Any ideas? I'm tempted to just send it off for a refurb now ...
Cheap battery chargers27 Dec 2007 11:53 GMT3
Tomorrow morning Aldi have some cheap battery chargers in. £13 a piece and
it looks like they'll manage trickle charging etc. for cars that are laid
up, which is nice, as usually these things are hilariously overpriced. Just
don't get there before I manage to buy myself two :).

Punto 1584cc Engine24 Dec 2007 20:44 GMT20
As title, was wondering if this engine is 'safe' in terms of cambelt
failure.
Yes it's broken and yes i should have changed it ages ago.
I just need to make the decision whether to chuck it in the bin or get it

Completed my HG change, simple stuff I've learned...23 Dec 2007 23:18 GMT5
I've completed my HG change, thanks for the tips to questions in
previous posts.  I've taken it out for a spin and it's running better
than ever, including fixing a long standing irregular idle issue (the
very early signs of HG going perhaps?).  Thought I might post a few bits
FS: Citroen Xantia Activa 2.0T for spares23 Dec 2007 16:39 GMT15
Right - this is the car I found by chance at a local garage who'd taken it
in part-ex and just wanted rid. It was ideal and cheap enough to take a punt
at even if not all the bits I wanted were good. Mine had a leaking
Hydractive II gizmo-doobris and a leaking front hydraulic ram ...
Water pipes to oil filter?23 Dec 2007 15:15 GMT18
As I walked back to the car (93 Rover 218SD (1900 Pug)) earlier I
noticed what looked like some water under the car (only a cup full).
It had been raining so could have been there before I parked 10 mins
earlier and / or run off a ledge etc.
Budget tyres23 Dec 2007 11:06 GMT59
What is the consensus generally on budget tyres?.
I've always been of the opinion 'expensive is usually better', but is there
really anything to be concerned about in regards to 'cheap' tyres. Surely
they all come up to current safely legislation so is buying cheap worth it?.
Shifting a rounded bolt you can't file down23 Dec 2007 10:12 GMT9
OK, I know I'm one more post off being either that MI5 or Mohamed xx
bloke tonight.
Assuming that I'd known I was going to be working on a potentially rusty
seized bolt and had been spraying it for several days with WD40, gave it

Is over heater a symptom/cause/both of a HG going?22 Dec 2007 22:23 GMT2
Just pondering this one today.  When the HGs went on both my Puntos they
 both did the following:
- A week or two of the engine misfiring a little when idle, getting
gradually worse.
