on a 2000 Merc C-Class fixed or replaced, preferably whilst I wait?
The LED info for odo, gear, clock etc.  have degenrated to illegible
Klingon... quite common, I understand?

Escort cutting out10 Dec 2007 17:39 GMT11
My '96 Escort (1.6 Zetec) was partial to the odd cut-out when cold, but it's
become really bad recently. I don't know if it's the cold/wet weather, or
the underlying problem is getting worse.
It'll start fine from cold, but for the first 2 or 3 minutes it will run as
Edward the Compressor10 Dec 2007 16:47 GMT16
Some while ago I bought one of those 12V DC tyre inflation compressors that
run from the vehicle's cigarette lighter socket.  It was absolutely useless.
My nephew has now asked for one of these in his Christmas stocking.  I guess
there must be a 12V DC compressor that does work ...
What Time Is it, Eccles?10 Dec 2007 12:18 GMT5
Ford Focus Ghia 1.8 2000W.
The LED clock on my Focus has lost its backlighting, making it impossible to
read.  I called into my local Ford Dealer to by a replacement bulb, but
there isn't one listed.  It seems I have to buy a new clock unit.
Leaking diesel cutoff valve?10 Dec 2007 10:10 GMT3
Recently I've been noticing a slight diesel smell after getting out of
the 93 Rover 218SD (1900 Pug). Yesterday I noticed a very slight trace
of diesel on the wet drive (emanating from under the front of the
engine somewhere).
What Paint ?10 Dec 2007 07:54 GMT5
I my youth if you wanted to paint your car you could nip down to the local
ironmongers and buy a tin of Valspar and good brush and the job was done, of
if you really wanted to push the boat out your got your mates Dads who
worked for London Transport to get some red cellulose ...
Brake pipes split with no sign of corrosion09 Dec 2007 21:11 GMT19
I just had my wife's car serviced and they did a full service and
replaced front brake pads.  After leaving garage I drove for less than
5 miles when the brakes failed completely! Luckily I was driving
slowly in a side road so was able to slow down and stop before I hit
Running engine with spark plug disconnected - how long to damage cat ?09 Dec 2007 01:31 GMT3
If a careless person were to disconnect one spark plug lead on a 4 cylinder
engine to improve access for some maintenance work, and afterwards start the
engine from cold and sit there thinking "hmm... that sounds a bit lumpy" for
30 seconds before realising their mistake and ...

Folowing on my my thread who sai golfs don't rust, I started reading some

Fiesta TDCi stalling and kangarooing08 Dec 2007 16:16 GMT6
Hi, just got a Fiesta TDCi, great little car apart from a couple of
(linked I think) problems,
It kangaroos at low revs, isnt smooth at all, and it can stall after
first being started in the morning.
Tyres slow leak08 Dec 2007 15:57 GMT15
The rear tyres on my Focus TDCi  are 195 60 R15 V.
I inflate them and after about two weeks the pressure is down to 10 lb psi.
Could it be coincidently leaky valves on both rear tyres? or could it be a
leaky tyre seal to the alloy rim?   Is there an easy fix?
Skimming cyl heads.08 Dec 2007 15:21 GMT14
On most modern heads, the journals for the camshaft or shafts are machined
as part of the head. Therefore if the head is skimmed flat because of
distortion, a permanent error is being put in the line up of the camshaft
journals.
