I have just swapped insurance on my wife's cars. The old Passat is now uninsured but taxed till January. Can I park it legally on the street outside the house or does it have to be off-road on the driveway ?

Right, I've got around £1700 to spend. I want a newer car than my old ZX, which though it's done me proud, I only bought it as a stopgap and now I want something more modern, quieter and a bit more interesting.

Just spotted an X reg VW Golf (1.8 GTI) with 116,000 on the clock. Would it mean the engine would be good on a new-ish car? It's selling for £5,295 and Autotrader confirmed a similar price for dealer. Or an VW Golf, Y reg (1.6) with 70,000 on the clock for £5,795, again
