N-reg Escort 1.8 TD, what to look for?18 Jan 2007 13:40 GMT22
I'm going to see one of these hopefully in the week.
It's done genuine 60k miles (previous paperwork to prove, apparently) and
has MOT for a few months.
It's a cheap car (less than £300), but what I'm basically looking for is
At the risk of starting a long thread - Power Washers and Engine Bays!!18 Jan 2007 12:14 GMT6
I've been power-washing the engine bay of my old 1997 2.0 Mondeo Ghia X for
many years, about once per year, without incident. Those of you who know
Fords will also know that this engine is petrol. For the record, I've never
bothered with covering distributors, coil packs, HT leads ...
Bolt Wanted17 Jan 2007 21:25 GMT20
I need an 8 mm bolt reverse thread for a machine saw. I don't know the
pitch or anything but it's probably metric -or not, as the case may be.
I am having trouble getting hold of one and thought I might try a scrap
yard or a motor factor if someone can suggest a vehicle.
Thin discs17 Jan 2007 14:32 GMT16
My discs are now down to the minimum specified thickness after 60000 miles.
The brake pads were changed at 40000 so have another 20000 miles to go.
What could go wrong if I leave the discs until I next change the pads?
Catalytic Converter smell?17 Jan 2007 14:29 GMT3
In this wet weather (maybe unrelated) I've started noticing a sulphur-like
smell in the car when I'm stationary at roundabouts, traffic lights etc.
Having ruled out that the eggy smell is not coming from my passengers, I
seem to recall someone saying once that your catalytic ...
Road Tax16 Jan 2007 18:25 GMT24
If you buy a second hand car and it's not taxed and as you have to wait to
get your insurance document from your insurer, is it illegal to drive
without tax. Lefts face it, its not your doing you have to wait for your
certificate and not your fault you have to have the ...

High-tech cars mounted with a CCTV camera in a periscope are being trialled

Factory-fitted vs Portable SatNav15 Jan 2007 20:09 GMT6
From reading numerous car reviews in magazines and on the internet etc, I
have the distinct impression that, compared with portable devices, e.g. the
excellent TomTom series, factory-fitted satellite navigation systems are
often (a) crap* and (b) doubly crap given how much they ...
TV sound effects15 Jan 2007 15:35 GMT8
Catching up on some stuff I'd recorded a few months ago, I recently watched
an episode of ITV's 'Rebus' which featured a new-shape VW Passat parking at
the side of a road, followed by the sound of the handbrake lever being
ratcheted up.
Head gasket failure?15 Jan 2007 09:02 GMT7
Hi all, I currently have a 306xsi with 90K on the clock. A week or s
ago i noticed a small puddle underneath the car. I checked again fo
the next few days and nothing, then again at the weekend it was there
(checked and it is water). I was doing my water etc checks and notice
Forward-facing speed cameras, are these really new?13 Jan 2007 08:27 GMT5
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6255219.stm
Are these "Forward facing speed cameras" that are being "tried out" and have
"been trialled in Essex over the past two years" any different to the
forward-facing camera (Truvelo? sp?) that has been in my local village since
Rover 7512 Jan 2007 20:12 GMT10
Is there any real reason to avoid these on the 2nd hand market? W/X/Y plate
models with FSH are starting to appear under £2k. Even some higher mileage
51/02 plates are around at £2500.

Ford Fiesta 2005 car key with coloured insert - whats it for?12 Jan 2007 12:32 GMT7
I have two keys for my car, one with a "beeper" to open the locks and
one that looks more like a regular key.
The regular looking one has a blue plastic insert in the top corner
with the letters "W1" on it and I was wondering what this is for, I
Trying to understand Electric Power Steering11 Jan 2007 14:09 GMT1
I am trying to understand how electric assisted power steering works.
The basic principle is that the wheel has to turn more than what is
applied on the steering wheel using a electric motor(basically to give
the driver a better feeling about the vehicle). As far as i have read,
Bullshit baffles brains?10 Jan 2007 10:35 GMT9
From a BMW press release on the "mid-life refresh" the 5-series is getting
