Anyone have ideas on how to stop this?
So far I've: Adjusted the valves, put in a new gasket, took off the
cover and put sealer on the gasket.
If anything it now leaks worse.

VW Passat Estate 1800CL 1985
I took the head off and had it skimmed, adjusted the valve clearences with
new shims and reassembled the engine. It starts but runs so 'lumpy' it shakes
the driver when ticking over. It isnt misfiring and it isnt slow to rev up.

That's the problem, it can be reset, but only stays reset
as little as 5 miles and we need it to pass emissions.
