NHTSA  Recalls Honda and Mercedes

Potential Number Of Units Affected : 6786

Summary:
on certain motorcycles, a damaged connector in the handlebar mounted headlight switch may cause the headlight to flicker and eventually fail.

Consequence:
if riding at night, the sudden loss of headlights could result in a crash.

Remedy:
dealers will install new left and right handle switch assemblies with undamaged connectors. An interim letter to owners was mailed on December 13, 2005. The recall is expected to begin on January 5, 2006. Owners should contact Honda at 1-866-784-1870.

Summary:
certain passenger vehicles equipped with sport model steering wheels fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 208, "occupant crash protection." during nhtsa compliance testing, in low risk deployment testing for 5th percentile female crash test dummy in out-of-position unbelted position test, irregularities were demonstrated.

Consequence:
the manufacturer is continuing to develop data concerning these tests. The manufacturer is notifying owners that they should have their air bag modules replaced with a module that is designed to be compatible with the existing nhtsa tests.

Remedy:
dealers will install a new air bag inflator module. The recall is expected to begin during mid-march 2006. Owners should contact mercedes-benz at 1-800-367-6372.
