Hyundai Delaying Introduction of Hybrid Models For U.S.

Autoweek   25 May 2006 15:05 GMTPage rating:

Hyundai Motor Co., citing currency problems, has delayed introduction of hybrid cars until 2009 at the earliest.
South Korea's currency, the won, has risen more than 8 percent against the dollar this year and is now at its highest level since 1997.

The muscular currency is pressuring export earnings at Korean automakers, which also are suffering from weak domestic sales. Korean auto sales are about 30 percent below expectations. The strong won means auto sales in the United States generate fewer won for Hyundai when the currency is exchanged.
