Porsche Attempting to Make Headway in Chinese Market

China is the world's fastest growing auto market. Yet Porsche is off to a slow start here. Rich consumers in China tend to hire chauffeurs to drive their Mercedes-Benz or BMW vehicles. But Jebsen & Co., the Porsche importer for China, thinks the time is right for wealthy Chinese to invest in a flashier second or third car.
The company is making a major push to promote Porsche's sexiest models in a country that historically has not been a major market for sports cars. Of the 91,219 vehicles Porsche sold worldwide last year, only 857 were sold in China. But that figure represented a tripling of 2004 sales. This year Porsche and Jebsen hope to sell 1,350 new vehicles in China.
