Expensive features such as front airbags and antilock brakes debuted in luxury vehicles. Then, over several years, they trickled down in an orderly fashion to lower-priced, mass-market vehicles.
But the rules are changing. Buyers of mainstream and even low-end vehicles are demanding much of the technology found in luxury cars. They want it at a quicker pace. Entertainment features are especially popular.
New technology still debuts on high-end vehicles. But the trickledown strategy has been complicated by the aggressiveness of Korean automakers, federal regulations and the rise of aftermarket alternatives.
The changing marketplace is altering the rollout of features such as stability control, side airbags, backup assist systems, satellite radio systems and navigation systems.
